Now, before I show you all the pretty photos, let me remind you what we started with. In a nutshell, our back door entry was an unwelcoming disaster area. The exposed utility boxes were atrocious. We finally decided to do something about it because we use our back door more than our front door! Most of our guests are good friends and family, so we always say, “Just park in the driveway and come to the back door.” Plus, Joe and I always enter our house either through the back door or the garage, so we see the back door entry all the time.

The light fixture was worn out and too small for the space. And the address numbers were too small and too traditional for the contemporary architecture of our home.

The biggest improvement we made was to build this gorgeous, contemporary wood screen to hide those utility boxes. I will be sharing the full tutorial for how we built laterthis monthon Remodelaholic! We absolutely love how it turned out!

We also purchased and hung a new light fixture and added larger, more contemporary floating address numbers to the wood screen. And of course, we hung the “;home”; state wood plaque, the tutorial for which you can find here.

We also added a colorful new outdoor rug in front of the doorand awesome concrete planter that I found at Target. I filled the planter with Creeping Jenny and a weeping pussy willow tree {not currently in bloom–;it's gorgeous when it is in bloom!} and am so thrilled with the color and life it adds to our entry area.

I also found this stunning faux succulent wreath at Target and hung it on the door with the most amazing clear command hooks I have ever found–;they are made just for hanging things on windows and I can't believe how well they work.

We also pulled over an extra chair that we had sitting on the larger part of the deck–;it's the perfect place to sit when we let our sweet dog, Titan out, or when we are cooking on the grill.

The only down side to our back door entry makeover is that now our deck looks EVEN worse than it did before. SIGH. Not to worry, we hope to completely re-do the deck in the Spring!

Now, you all know I cannot resist a good “;before”; and “;after”; comparison, so here goes!

After Nikki Li Kinowski (@jeadoreblogger) made a dress for herself from our Dark Floral Fabric, her daughter Imogen asked Mom to make one in her size. Imogen loved receiving a gift from Nikki that was her mother's own concept and creation, and of course she loved being able to dress up just like Mom.

Last weekend I visited the KC Symphony Designers’ Showhouse which was beautiful! Walking through the home, I realized that there is so much to take away from an old house.
